Bulldogs

Bulldogs are very ancient dogs developed specially for bull baiting and controlling the cattle. The ancestors of the modern Bulldogs appeared in England. The first record of the breed dates back to the 13th century. Bulldogs were praised for their courage, strength, and a low pain threshold. When bull baiting was banned in 1835, the breed lost its main function and was preserved only due to the efforts of devoted breeders. They turned a fierce fighting dog into an affectionate and amiable family companion.

Present-day Bulldogs are considered to be the acme of canine breeding and a fine example of the breeding art. The exterior of this breed is so exaggerated that the Bulldog is absolutely dependent on humans and cannot survive without the owner. Several physical traits of the Bulldog can be detrimental for the health of the dog. An extremely short muzzle may cause breathing difficulties; a large head of the puppies makes natural labor impossible; facial folds need regular cleaning; a short coat doesn’t protect from the cold; stocky muscular body puts a strain on the bones and leads to skeletal disorders.

Too exaggerated appearance is not the main aim in breeding present-day Bulldogs. Responsible breeders try to improve the health of their dogs. Several breed varieties were created in an attempt to preserve the best characteristics of the Bulldog and improve its health. The American Bulldogs stemmed from the English Bulldogs early in the 19th century; the French Bulldog was developed late in the 19th century. The Valley Bulldog appeared in the 1950s, the Banter Bulldogge appeared in the 1990s. Only a few breeders continue to breed original Bulldogs that are nowadays referred to as the Olde English Bulldogge.

This breed is not for anyone. It needs special training and has specific keeping requirements and vet attention. When breeding and buying a dog of this breed, the health and personality of the dog should be the priorities. The Bulldog is a strong and independent-thinking dog that thrives on human attention. It can serve as a guard and personal protector or can make a playmate for children. Bulldogs are good at conformation and obedience.
