Bulldogs are not easy to rear. Every prospective owner should understand the commitment needed to keep such a dog. Never buy a puppy on impulse or as presents. Children should not be responsible for providing the necessary care for Bulldogs, because it is rather specific and difficult.
When buying a purebred dog, keep away from the pet stores. They buy animals from puppy mills and brokers. Even if you are told that all puppies in the store are from reputable breeders, don't believe it, because trustworthy and reliable breeders will never sell their puppies to wholesalers and unknown people.
Be careful with ads in local newspapers, because hobby breeders often have little experience and sell their puppies for gaining profit. They mate occasional parents without careful screening. Responsible and reputable breeders don't have to advertise their dogs, because they usually have waiting lists before the litter is born.
If you don't know how to find a breeder, contact the Bulldog Club of America and ask for references. There is a special breeder referral program in the AKC. It helps find breeders of various dog breeds in your area. Another way is to visit a dog show or competitions for purebreds and talk to other owners of purebred Bulldogs.
