From their old fathers, these dogs have inherited large head, wrinkled muzzle, powerful body and distinctive upturned jaw, which used to provide for a firm bite. Despite their somewhat aggressive look, these dogs are gentle and convivial, and they are not even wary of strangers. This dog originated in the 13th century, when bull-baiting traditions were initiated. These dogs were larger than the modern breed, and they had an extremely vicious and aggressive temperament. A dog has to be powerful enough to put down the huge monster of a bull.

One of the main things to consider when choosing a pup of this breed is its health and health of its parents. The only way to avoid serious health problems in a purebred dog is buying from a reputable breeder. The appearance of these dogs is so exaggerated that besides hereditary health problems, this breed is prone to a number of other disorders. Like with all massive breeds, these dogs are prone to hip dysplasia and problems with joints. Their short muzzle makes them sensitive to heat. Most pups are delivered by Cesarean section.
