Short muzzle provides for a sure grip, but it causes breathing difficulties; large head is very suited for bull baiting, but it makes labor very difficult. Dogs of this breed are very dependent on their owners and cannot survive if got lost. The life span of this breed is very short: only 7-8 years.

The breed is descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff. The development of the breed took place in Great Britain and the name is closely connected with the work the dog used to fulfill.
