A free bulldog with some defects can be obtained from a breeder, but usually breeders don't breed pet quality animals.
Tenacity and courage were the main characteristics of the early dogs of this breed. Nowadays, these dogs retain their characteristics, but their working abilities are no longer used for their original purpose. These strong and massive dogs are used mostly as pets. Only the American variety of the breed can be used for hunting and personal protection. In spite of their weird appearance, a typical personality of the breed is very friendly and affectionate.

The dog dates back to the 13th century, when the tradition of bull-baiting was founded. Until 1835, this dog underwent lots of changes both in terms of appearance and behavior. Breeders worked toward accentuating the size or the skull, the firmness of the grip and endurance. After the prohibition of bull baiting, the breed suffered neglect and decline, and this called the existence of the breed in question. New breeding programs produced dogs with somewhat formidable looks and quite friendly temperaments. There are English, French and American dogs, and they are kept as pets and companions.
