The typical head of the Bulldog is massive and short-faced. The skull is very large in proportion to the body. The circumference of the head should be equal to the height of the dog at the shoulders. The forehead should be flat, not domed or rounded, neither overhanging the face. The muzzle should be turned upward and very deep.

The eyes should be situated low down in the skull, far from ears and as wide apart as possible. The eyes should be round, dark and of moderate size. The ears should be set rather high. The shape of a rose-petal is the most desirable. Ears that are erect or pricked are faults.

The jaws should be very massive, broad, square and undershot. The lower jaw must project in front of the upper jaw and turn up. The teeth should be large and strong, with the canines wide apart.

The nose should be broad and black; the tip of the nose should be set deeply between the eyes. The nostrils should be wide, with a well-defined vertical line between them. The cheeks are prominent; the flews are thick, broad and very deep.

The coat of this breed is short, straight, lying close to the body, smooth in texture and glossy. The skin should be loose, especially at the neck, shoulders and head. The preferred colors for Bulldogs are: red and other brindles, white, fawn, fallow, and piebald.
